flinging poo

(sugar bowls by Gary Rith)
I think the first book I remember really liking, although it is a weird book, was Babar, and I think that the first movie I ever saw at a cinema was either Pinocchio (LOVE it still) or Dumbo. Poor Dumbo, everybody is so mean.
Anyway, I love elephants just like I love pigs, even though it does not mean I want to hang out with them, but they make great art subjects. Dr Seuss drew them best I think, with Horton.
I was down at the zoo near here last summer talking with an employee about elephants. I was remembering that the elephants at the zoo when I lived in Chicago were pretty ornery (with good reason, they belong in the wild not a dinky cage) and they would grab some of their SIZEABLE poo balls and fling it at people. There was always poo all over the walls, everywhere. So the zooo employee tells me that they don't keep elephants there because elephants have a reputation as very difficult, and I am looking at the tigers thinking "And those guys are not? Wouldn't they swipe off your head and eat your liver just for fun????"

Cute bowls, I hope they get filled with sugar rather than poo.

When I was a kid my mother took my sister and me to the Little Rock zoo. They had an elephant that was so docile that we could feed her peanuts by hand. That was pretty cool. I think the Asian elephants are much easier to deal with than the African.

At the NC Zoo most of the animals are in large natural habitats. it also means that somedays the elephants (and other animals) will not be close to the viewing area but off in the distance and you may need binoculars to get a good look at them. i would rather they be happier than for me to be able to see them up close.

Oh I loved Horton, and Dumbo great animals stories for sure. I agree that in this day and age you would think we would know better than to lock up in a prison like setting poor creatures who have done nothing. I am quite happy seeing videos of them in the wild, or looking at photos of them. I don't need to get up close and chummy with Apex Predators, or any other animal who is unhappy in their setting. Great post!

yeah, zoos are pretty horrifying even if they do do (poo fling) good things for wildlife and habitat preservation. its scary going to them. pacing tigers and angry monkeys. cages are rediculous in/for any purpose

I was lucky to grow up visiting the Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle. They have an incredible elephant exhibit.
Still, I can't imagine living in a place where people just stare at you all day long.

Dumbo is just about the only movie that can make me cry. When he goes to visit his mother in the jail-cage-train car and they play "Baby Mine" while she rocks him with her trunk-- kills me every time.

Oh Gary I love the pots! I remember the elephant at the local zoo when I was growing up. Her name was Sh-Boom and I would see her every year. She died in 2002 and I was suprisingly sad about it.
