late summer = first apples and first APPLE CRISP

bottle with a dog by Gary Rith
bottle with a dog stopper by Gary Rith

You will recall that Saturday we were at Indian Creek Farm, amongst other places.  They had the first apples!  New York state is, I think, the largest producer of apples in the US, second only to Washington State.  BUT we had crazy hot weather in March with early apple blossoms and then terrible winter weather in April, and most of the apple crop is ruined for this year, horrible!  But not all of it.
Indian Creek Farm seems to grow everything, and they have awesome apples and we got a bunch...our plan was to make this very complicated French apple tart....meh.  Monday is complicated enough, right? We dug out our old apple crisp recipe instead! *(follows) Interestingly, we were having it for breakfast and it is freezing cold inside and out, around 50 degrees, sure looking and feeling like...fall...

*apple crisp!!!! the oatmeal, gluten free version!!!!!

-preheat 375
-dice 5 cups apples, which is about 5 apples, more or less, lay into 2 quart baking dish and stir in 3 TBS sugar
-in a bowl, put in 1/4 cup margerine or butter, 1/2 cup rolled oats, 1/2 cup brown sugar, 1/4 cup oat flour (or just plain flour), lotsa sprinkles of ginger, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon too---then use a knife or pastry cutter to chop and combine until it is a crumbly mix
-stir into that 1/4 cup or more nuts, then pour the whole mix onto the top of the apples
-bake 30-35 at 375!

APPLE SAUCE. The world loves apple sauce, so easy, and good for frozen apples!

Sadly, I am in the land of no apples and no crisp fall weather. However, I do bootleg apples back from my fall trips to the great state of Minnesota. And this year is apple butter making year! Apple crisp makes a great breakfast!

That looks yummy. I'll try this when apples come into season in GA (in a month or two).
