the GOOD life....
I was reading a friend's blog post about moving a couple of hours drive from Toronto to northern Canada (technically NOT northern unless you are from the Toronto area or New York, like us, and think that northern Canada starts in Toronto's suburbs ;) It was easy to see that the winter was impressively colder and snowier than she was accustomed to, but more importantly: in summer? THE BUGS! Holy moley, the bugs-black flies, followed by mosquitos and deer flies, etc. The same happened to us when we moved from the Boston area to the woods of New Hampshire; OH MY FUGGING GOD the bugs....starting May 1, going until October 1. It was so cruel, you have a long terrible winter and the lovely warm days are filled with CLOUDS of blood suckers. People near us in New Hampshire would walk around in suits of mosquito netting. I do not miss New Hampshire, and we lived there ten years....
It is a big surprise living in central New York. I go to my parent's farm and deep woods: no bugs. The woods around our house? No bugs. I know there are biting insects in clouds somewhere around upstate NY, but I AM SO GRATEFUL to have so few you don't notice.
My point? We sit out on our UNscreened back deck every nice evening, as you see in the pic above. Wouldn't you? Have a great Thursday!

We live in Michigan...this year, we did quite a bit of sitting on our back patio.....and I was pleasantly surprised to see I have a bat doing his job back there. There's nothing like watching the stars come out with a nice beverage, watching the bat bombing bugs.
Showoff! ;-)
Thanks for the linkage, Gary. :-)
Spring in NH (if you live in the woods) is so cruel! After the looooong winter you are just itching to get outside in the nice weather... and then you are literally ITCHING. Another name for Spring is black fly season.
TRUE, we also have boatloads of bats and also dragonflies :)
I spent some time in Northern WI which sounds like NH. Six months of winter followed by mosquito season. Both are really, really pretty as compensation.
I would happily sit on your deck with that pear and that cheese and especially that risqué glass of wine! Ooh la la!
I am envious! Evenings can not be done outside here unless you coat yourself in DEET first.
FABULOUS pear and cheese and goblet!
Bugs? Ugh. But ... bats you say? I just fainted.
